Product Description

AS THE GAME REVEALS THE PLAYER, SO DOES THIS BOOK REVEAL THE COACH

Phil Jackson is the most celebrated coach in basketball today, earning that respect by guiding his teams in Chicago and Los Angeles to an astounding eight NBA championships. The key to his success, he thinks is his ability to understand the complexities of the players as well as the intricacies of the game. With this memorable book, Phil joins his friend Charley Rosen, a former player and coach who knows success at the game's highest levels, to bring new insight to the challenge of coaching and to honor the innate grace of basketball and its players.

Jackson and Rosen take you from the cracked blacktop courts of the inner city to the polished hardwood of the country's finest arenas, exposing the demanding reality of professional basketball: a world of glamour, glitter, and greed, in which nobility can still be found in the single-minded pursuit of athletic perfection.

From his playing days in college and with the world champion Knicks of the 1970's to his victories courtside with the Bulls and the Lakers, Jackson relates his philosophy of coaching, fondly talks about the memorable players and plays of the past, and candidly expresses his feelings about today's rules and referees. Simply a must for any fan, this book reveals the very heart of the sport, reminding us that basketball is much more than just a game.

5 out of 5 stars This is the second book I've read by Phil Jackson   April 3, 2007

I read "Secred Hoops" and was really blown away. Jackson is a very enlightened writer, and it's fascinating to see how a zen approach to teamwork is really proven by reality and experience. I'm not much of a basketball fan, but now after reading "More Than a Game" I know a whole lot more about it's philosophy and strategy.

4 out of 5 stars Hoopaholics In Love   July 23, 2005

This book is basketball junkie paradise. As for me, whenever Charlie or Phil went into detail about the triangle, I had no idea what they were talking about. And hey, dig them squiggly-line charts in the back of the book!

But otherwise the book is a relaxed, informal "conversation" between two old, very good buddies, sharing their beautiful obsession. It was sweet to gradually become aware of and then vicariously revel in the deep bond the two guys have, all from their passionate love of hoops and its people.

Let the technicalities wash over you and enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars More than a Game by Phil Jackson and Charlie Rosen   March 14, 2005

More than a Game is one of those books that is entertaining and interesting, but only applies to a certain type of people. Coaches and basketball enthusiasts will enjoy this book, but you should pass if you don't particularly like the sport of basketball. Phil Jackson, former coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago Bulls, gives insight into the strategic world of basketball, from the past to the present. Charlie Rosen, a former college player, coauthors the book. However, More than a Game is focused more on Phil Jackson. The book shows the background of two talented, intelligent basketball players from different regions-- Charlie from the city, and Phil from the country. They mesh perfectly as a dynamic duo. This book also gives insight to the formation of the Triangle offense, something that has perplexed the basketball audience for years. This is a great read for anyone who followed the Chicago Bulls and/or Los Angeles Lakers championship years. The glossary and play diagrams at the end of the book are helpful and descriptive. A minor basketball fan could understand the book, but only a coach or basketball intellectual could truly enjoy it. More than a Game is a good book if you enjoy basketball and admire the genius of Phil Jackson, but like I said, it's not for everyone.
